About this Attraction

Stepping into Arankele Monastery was like entering a world frozen in time. Nestled amidst the serene greenery of the Ganewatta Divisional Secretariat in the Kurunegala District, this ancient site offers a unique glimpse into the meditative lifestyle of Buddhist monks from centuries ago. Known as Sri Lanka's premier forest hermitage, Arankele was once a haven for Bhikkhus and was dedicated to deep meditation and spiritual practices.

A Journey into Tranquility

Walking through the forested hillside, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. The towering hardwood trees formed a natural canopy, shading the ruins scattered across the hillside. The air was crisp, carrying the faint aroma of wildflowers and damp earth, enhancing the meditative ambience.

What struck me immediately was the simplicity of the site. Unlike other monasteries adorned with ornate stupas and statues, Arankele’s architectural style is minimalistic, reflecting the austere lifestyle of the monks who once lived here.

Exploring the Rock Caves

One of the most fascinating features of Arankele is its natural rock caves tucked into the slopes of the hill. These caves, with their rough exteriors and meticulously lime-plastered interiors, were used by monks as meditation chambers. Standing inside one of these caves, I could almost hear the echoes of ancient chants, a stark reminder of its spiritual history.

Discovering Ancient Innovations

Arankele isn’t just a collection of caves; it’s also a marvel of ancient ingenuity. I was particularly intrigued by the Jantaghara, a massive hot water bathing house that stretched over 100 feet in length and 60 feet in breadth. This structure served as a place for elderly and ailing monks to receive medicinal baths. The hearths used to boil water and grind herbal medicines still stand, silent witnesses to the healing practices of the past.

The Dual Platforms and Meditative Promenades

Another highlight of my visit was the stone-faced double-platform structures believed to be used for ceremonies and meditation. Walking along the ambulatories and promenades, I imagined the monks pacing back and forth, lost in thought and reflection. The simplicity of these platforms, with their precisely laid stones, was a stark reminder of the disciplined lives these monks led.

A Glimpse of Ayurvedic Heritage

One of the surprises of my visit was learning about the Ayurvedic heritage preserved at Arankele. The site contains grinding stones used for preparing herbal medicines, hinting at the presence of an Ayurvedic hospital. The massive hot water pond, believed to be the largest in Sri Lanka, further highlights the monks’ commitment to physical and spiritual well-being.

What Makes Arankele Unique

Its focus on simplicity and functionality sets Arankele apart from other historical sites in Sri Lanka. This isn’t a place of grand displays or touristy attractions; it’s where nature and history coexist perfectly.
