Wilpattu National Park Safari Tour

About This Activity

When I planned my visit to Wilpattu National Park, I was excited but unsure what to expect. Known as Sri Lanka’s largest national park, spanning over 1,317 square kilometres, it promised an adventure filled with wildlife, unique landscapes, and a touch of mystery. My expectations were high—and Wilpattu didn’t disappoint.

The Journey to Wilpattu

After a four-hour drive from Colombo, I arrived at the Hunuwilgama Entrance, the main gateway to Wilpattu National Park. The road leading up to the park was dotted with small villages and fields, giving me a glimpse of rural Sri Lankan life. The anticipation grew as we approached the park’s boundaries, where the dense forest canopy enveloped the road.

The Start of the Safari

Climbing into the back of an open-top jeep, I felt the excitement building. The park is only accessible via jeep safaris, and the driver, an experienced tracker, assured me this was the best way to explore the wilderness. As we entered the park, the air was fresh and cool, with the sounds of rustling leaves and distant birdcases setting the tone for the adventure ahead.

The Unique Landscape

Wilpattu’s landscape is unlike any other national park I’ve visited. Its “Willus”, or natural lakes, were a surprising and serene sight, shimmering under the morning sun. These wetlands add to the park’s beauty and support a thriving ecosystem. The dense forest alternated with open plains and sandy dunes, creating a dynamic environment that kept me curious about what lay around the next bend.

Wildlife Encounters

The highlight of Wilpattu is, of course, its wildlife. Our first major sighting was a herd of spotted deer grazing near a waterhole, their elegant forms blending perfectly with the golden grass. Not long after, I caught a fleeting glimpse of a Sri Lankan Leopard, its sleek figure disappearing into the underbrush. It was thrilling, even if brief—knowing these elusive creatures roam freely here was enough to send chills down my spine.

Other notable sightings included a family of Sri Lankan elephants leisurely moving through the forest, a sloth bear scavenging near a tree, and a monitor lizard basking by one of the “Willus.” The park’s avian life was equally captivating, with colourful kingfishers, eagles, and painted storks adding vibrant splashes of colour to the green landscape.

A Haven for Birdwatchers

Wilpattu is a paradise for birdwatchers. I spotted several species, including herons, egrets, and a striking serpent eagle perched high in a tree. The natural lakes seemed to attract flocks of migratory birds, creating an ever-changing canvas of life and movement.

A Personal Connection to Nature

What struck me most about Wilpattu was the sense of peace it offers. Unlike busier parks, its vast size and dense forest create an intimate experience with nature. There were moments when we stopped the jeep and just listened—the silence punctuated by birdsong and the rustle of leaves was incredibly calming.

Practical Tips for Visitors

Timing: Early mornings (6 AM to 10 AM) and late afternoons (3 PM to 6 PM) are the best times for wildlife sightings.

Bring Essentials: Don’t forget water, sunscreen, and binoculars for spotting distant animals.

Dress Comfortably: Light, breathable clothing and sturdy shoes are necessary for a safari.
