Lankarama Stupa

About this Attraction

Tucked away within the ancient city of Anuradhapura, the Lankarama Stupa is a tranquil and lesser-visited marvel. As I walked toward this historic site, its simplicity and serene surroundings immediately caught my attention. Unlike the towering grandeur of other stupas in the region, Lankarama’s charm lies in its understated elegance and quiet atmosphere.

The Lankarama Stupa was constructed by King Valagamba (89–77 BC), who is also credited with creating the iconic Abhayagiri Stupa. Historical accounts suggest that this stupa was built on the site where the king once resided during his reign. As I approached the stupa, I imagined the ancient rituals and ceremonies that might have occurred here centuries ago.

Though smaller than others in Anuradhapura, the stupa has a unique circular design. A golden pinnacle glimmers atop the dome, and the base is surrounded by rows of stone pillars that hint at the vatadage—a circular structure that once enclosed the stupa. My guide explained that these stone pillars remain of a grand pavilion that would have protected the stupa in ancient times.

One fascinating detail about Lankarama is its location within a tranquil, tree-covered area. The stupa’s round courtyard, spanning over 406 meters in diameter, is peaceful and offers a sense of seclusion from the bustling attractions nearby. Walking around the site, I found myself appreciating the simplicity of its design, which seemed to reflect the meditative values of Buddhism.

Though not as famous as its counterparts like Ruwanwelisaya or Jetawanaramaya, Lankarama holds a unique place in Anuradhapura’s rich history. It reminds us of King Valagamba’s devotion to Buddhism and his efforts to rebuild the kingdom after turmoil.

As I sat under a tree near the stupa, the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft chants of a group of pilgrims created a soothing ambience. It was the perfect spot to pause, reflect, and connect with the history and spirituality of this ancient place.

Leaving Lankarama, I felt a deep sense of calm and appreciation for the subtle beauty of this hidden gem. It may not have the grandeur of larger stupas, but its historical significance and serene environment make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the wonders of Anuradhapura.
