About this Attraction

Located in the Mahamevnāwa Park of Anuradhapura, the Samadhi Buddha Statue dates back to the 3rd or 4th century AD. The statue is carved from a single block of dolomite marble and stands 7 feet 3 inches tall. It depicts the Buddha in the Dhyana Mudra—a meditative posture with legs crossed and hands resting in the lap, symbolising deep meditation and inner tranquillity.

The statue's serene expression is renowned for its subtle dynamism. Observers note that the Buddha's face changes when viewed from different angles, exuding serenity from the front, a hint of sorrow from one side, and a gentle smile from the other. This nuanced craftsmanship reflects the profound empathy and compassion of the Buddha.

🛕 Cultural and Religious Context

The Samadhi Buddha is believed to have been part of a quartet of statues surrounding a sacred Bodhi tree shrine, symbolising the Buddha's enlightenment. Discovered in 1886, the statue had suffered damage over time, including to its nose, which was reconstructed during restoration efforts. Notably, the statue's eyes are hollow, suggesting they were once inlaid with precious gems.

Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major centre for Theravada Buddhism. The city's rich spiritual heritage is evident in its numerous ancient monasteries, stupas, and temples.

🌿 Visiting the Samadhi Buddha Statue

When visiting the Samadhi Buddha Statue, it's customary to dress modestly—clothing should cover shoulders and knees, and white or light-colored attire is encouraged to reflect Buddhist traditions. Shoes must be removed before entering the sacred area. The statue is accessible to visitors daily, and early morning visits are recommended for a more tranquil experience.

The surrounding Mahamevnāwa Park offers a serene environment for reflection. The gentle rustle of leaves and distant chants of pilgrims enhance the meditative atmosphere.
